Why Convert JPG to PNG

The most common reason to convert JPG to PNG is to stop cumulative quality loss. Every time you save a JPG, the compression algorithm runs again and discards a little more information. If you plan to edit an image multiple times, converting to PNG first ensures that each round of editing starts from a lossless copy.

Other reasons include needing transparency support (you can remove a background from a PNG but not a JPG), preparing images for graphic design work where pixel-perfect quality is required, and archiving originals in a format that will never degrade.

The Trade-offs of JPG to PNG

Converting JPG to PNG increases file size significantly without recovering lost quality. A 500KB JPG typically becomes a 2-5MB PNG because PNG uses lossless compression on the same pixels that JPG already degraded.

To be clear: converting JPG to PNG does not restore any quality that was lost during JPG compression. The PNG will be a lossless version of the compressed JPG, not the original. Think of it as freezing the current state of the image so no further degradation occurs during future edits.

When PNG Is Worth the Larger File Size

PNG is the right choice when: you are creating or editing a graphic, logo, or illustration that requires sharp edges, you need a transparent background (logos on colored banners, overlay graphics), you are working with screenshots or UI images where text must remain crisp, or you are building a file you will edit many more times.

For finished images that are ready to publish or share, JPG is almost always better. For working files and images with special requirements, PNG's lossless quality pays off.
