Why WebP Files Are Everywhere in 2026
WebP became the default image format for many modern websites and platforms starting around 2020-2021. Google Image Search, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and most modern CMS platforms serve WebP automatically because it reduces bandwidth by 25-35% compared to JPG. When you download an image from these sites, you often get a .webp file.
This creates a compatibility problem: many desktop apps (Photoshop older versions, Windows Photo Viewer on older Windows 10, some email clients) still do not support WebP. Converting to JPG makes the file universally usable.
Which Apps Still Don't Support WebP
As of 2026, WebP is not supported by: Windows Photo Viewer on Windows 10 (without the WebP codec installed), Adobe Photoshop older than version 23.2 (2021), most email clients including Outlook, Apple Mail, and Gmail (which convert WebP to PNG when displaying), older versions of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint), and many older mobile apps.
For sharing via email, inserting into Word or PowerPoint documents, printing, or using in older software — convert WebP to JPG first.
WebP to JPG Conversion Quality
WebP and JPG use similar compression approaches (both are lossy formats based on Discrete Cosine Transform). Converting between them at high quality settings produces results that are visually identical to the original. Our default 92% quality setting preserves the full visual content of the WebP file in the JPG output.
The only exception is transparent WebP images. WebP supports alpha channel transparency (like PNG), but JPG does not. Transparent areas become white in the JPG output. If your WebP has a transparent background, download as PNG instead to preserve transparency.
