Discord Has Three Different Banner Sizes - Here's Which to Use
Discord uses different banner sizes for three distinct display contexts, and using the wrong one results in a stretched or cropped result.
Server Banner (960 x 540 px, 16:9): the large banner displayed at the top of your server when members open it. Requires Level 2 server boost (7 boosts) to unlock. Format: PNG, JPG, or GIF (Level 3 for animated). Max 10 MB.
Profile Banner (600 x 240 px, 5:2): the personal banner shown at the top of your user profile. Requires Discord Nitro. Format: PNG, JPG, or GIF. Max 10 MB.
Invite Splash Screen (1920 x 1080 px, 16:9): the full-screen image shown to people opening your server's invite link. Requires Level 1 server boost. Format: PNG or JPG. Max 10 MB.
This tool defaults to 960 x 540 (server banner) because that is the most common request. For profile banner, change to 600 x 240. For invite splash, use 1920 x 1080.
Server Banner Mobile Crop Behavior
Like most platforms, Discord crops banners differently on mobile vs desktop. On desktop, the full 960 x 540 server banner is visible at the top of the server. On mobile, Discord crops it to a wider, shorter rectangle of approximately 540 x 240 pixels.
Design implication: keep important content (server name graphics, character art, key visuals) in the central 540 x 240 region of your 960 x 540 design. Treat the outer regions as background that may not be visible on mobile.
For server splash screens (1920 x 1080), the mobile crop is less aggressive because mobile devices are wide enough to render closer to the full aspect ratio. The same centering principle applies.
Server Boost Requirements for Banners
Banner features unlock at specific server boost levels:
Level 1 (2 boosts): Custom invite splash screen (1920 x 1080). Level 2 (7 boosts): Custom server banner (960 x 540), in PNG or JPG. Level 3 (14 boosts): Animated server banner (GIF).
Boosts come from individual Nitro subscribers contributing to your server. Each Nitro user has 2 boosts to spend. Your members must voluntarily boost your server to unlock these features. The boost levels also unlock other perks (audio quality, sticker slots, emoji slots), so they are not purely banner-focused.
Animated GIF Banners: When and How
Animated banners are visually distinctive but technically demanding. The 10 MB file size limit is generous for static images but tight for GIF animation, especially at 960 x 540 resolution.
Strategies to fit a high-quality animated banner under 10 MB:
1. Short loop (2-4 seconds). Long animations bloat fast. 2. Limited frame rate (15-20 fps is plenty for a background banner). 3. Limited color palette (use Indexed mode in your editor with 256 colors). 4. Smooth gradients and simple motion compress better than detailed textures with rapid changes. 5. Consider subtle motion (a flowing background, a soft glow) over fast-paced animation, which both compresses better and reads better as a banner.
