Pixel Display Specifications

Google Pixel 9 (2024) and Pixel 8 (2023) share the same 6.3-inch Actua display at 1080 x 2424 pixels. The pixel density is 422 ppi. This is the standard Pixel line.

Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL step up to 6.3-inch and 6.8-inch Super Actua displays at 1280 x 2856 and 1344 x 2992 respectively. These are LTPO panels with 1-120Hz adaptive refresh.

For wallpaper purposes, the standard Pixel and Pro share enough resolution that the same wallpaper file works on both with mild quality differences. The Pro models render slightly sharper due to higher pixel density.

The Pixel 8 and 9 a-series (Pixel 8a, 9a if released) use slightly different displays: 6.1-6.3-inch at 1080 x 2400. The 24-pixel vertical difference is negligible.

Pixel Wallpaper Customization Features

Pixel devices offer wallpaper features that affect design choice:

AI-generated wallpapers: Pixel 8 and 9 can generate wallpapers using on-device AI. These are typically high-resolution (1080 x 2424 or higher) and theme-coordinated. If you want a custom photo to compete visually, design at native resolution with strong contrast.

Cinematic wallpapers: Pixel can apply 3D depth effects to portrait photos. This works best with single-subject portraits where the subject is sharp and the background is blurred. Generic flat wallpapers don't benefit from cinematic effect.

Wallpaper themes: Pixel Launcher can apply your wallpaper's color theme to app icons (icons get tinted to match your wallpaper's dominant color). This is the Material You system. Subtle gradient wallpapers generate clean themes; busy wallpapers generate muddy themes.
