Digital Passport Photo Dimensions by Country (2026)

Passport photo requirements vary significantly by country. United States: 2x2 inches (51x51mm), 600x600 to 1200x1200 pixels, white background. United Kingdom: 35x45mm, minimum 600x750 pixels, light grey or cream background. European Union (Biometric): 35x45mm, minimum 400x514 pixels, white or off-white background. India: 35x45mm or 200x200 to 1000x1000 pixels depending on the portal. Australia: 35x45mm, minimum 600x775 pixels.

For digital submissions, 600x600 pixels at JPEG format works for most US portals and online renewal systems. Always verify your specific country or portal requirements before submitting.

Passport Photo Content Requirements

Most countries share the same content rules for passport photos: plain white or off-white background (no shadows), head must be centered and fill 70-80% of the frame, both eyes open and visible, neutral expression (no smile in most countries), no glasses (US, UK, EU, Canada all prohibit glasses since 2016-2021), no hat or head covering (exceptions for religious items), taken within the last 6 months.

For digital submissions: no filters, no retouching, no AI enhancement. The US State Department explicitly prohibits AI-modified passport photos as of January 2026.

How to Prepare a Passport Photo with Your Smartphone

Step 1: Use a plain white wall or hang a white sheet as the background. Avoid shadows by using natural light from a window to your side, or two equal light sources from both sides.

Step 2: Have the subject stand 2-3 feet from the background (prevents shadows on the wall). Position the camera at eye level.

Step 3: Take the photo in portrait orientation, ensuring the head fills 70-80% of the frame with some space above the head.

Step 4: Use our Resize tool to crop to the required dimensions (600x600 for most US submissions), then compress to meet the file size requirement (typically under 100-240KB). Review for shadows, expression, and background before submitting.
