The three feed ratios and which one wins

Facebook feed images come down to three shapes. Square is 1080 x 1080 (1:1). Portrait is 1080 x 1350 (4:5). Landscape is 1200 x 630 (roughly 1.91:1, the same ratio link previews use).

For reach, portrait wins on mobile, and almost everyone is on mobile now. A 4:5 image is taller, so it pushes competing posts further down the screen and holds the eye longer. Square is fine when you care about how your profile grid lines up. Landscape is mostly for shared links and the occasional banner-style image. If you are unsure, default to 1080 x 1350.

Stories have their own rules

A Facebook Story is a different animal from a feed post. It fills the whole phone screen at 1080 x 1920 (9:16), and Facebook overlays interface on top: your profile photo and name across the top, the reply and reaction bar across the bottom.

Keep your key content out of the top 250 px and the bottom 340 px so the interface does not cover it. The middle of the frame is where your message, face, or product should live. Same image quality advice applies, export at full width and let Facebook do the downscaling rather than uploading something small.
