The iPhone 12 / 13 / 14 Shared Display

Apple kept the iPhone 12 standard display unchanged for three generations. iPhone 12 (2020), iPhone 13 (2021), and iPhone 14 (2022) all use the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display at 1170 x 2532 pixels with 460 ppi density.

This means a wallpaper sized for any of these three phones fits the others perfectly. If you have a friend or family member who upgrades within this range, the same wallpaper file works on their new phone too.

The iPhone 14 Pro broke this pattern by introducing the Dynamic Island, which slightly increased the visible screen area and bumped the resolution to 1179 x 2556. The same 6.1-inch physical screen, more usable pixels.

Notch-Aware Wallpaper Design

iPhone 14 (standard) still uses the notch - the small cutout at the top center of the display that houses the front camera and Face ID sensors. The notch is approximately 32 px tall and 209 px wide centered at the top of the 1170 px width.

For lock screen wallpapers, this matters because the notch covers a portion of your design. The system clock sits below the notch, not above it. If you have important content (a logo, a face, a focal point) in the top center 32-50 px, the notch will partially cover it.

The fix: keep important content out of the top 80 px to give the notch breathing room. Or place a horizontal element along the top edge intentionally - solid color bars, gradient strips, or texture backgrounds work fine with the notch overlay.
