Pro Max Resolution History

Apple has slowly grown the Pro Max display over six generations:

iPhone XS Max / 11 Pro Max: 1242 x 2688 (6.5 inches) iPhone 12 Pro Max / 13 Pro Max: 1284 x 2778 (6.7 inches) iPhone 14 Pro Max: 1290 x 2796 (6.7 inches, with Dynamic Island) iPhone 15 Plus: 1290 x 2796 (6.7 inches, notch) iPhone 15 Pro Max: 1290 x 2796 (6.7 inches, Dynamic Island) iPhone 16 Plus: 1320 x 2868 (6.9 inches, notch) iPhone 16 Pro Max: 1320 x 2868 (6.9 inches, Dynamic Island)

The 1290 x 2796 default in this tool covers three generations of Pro Max (14 Pro Max, 15 Pro Max, 15 Plus). For 16 Plus / Pro Max, the resolution is 1320 x 2868 - close enough that a 1290 x 2796 wallpaper looks fine but custom dimensions give the sharpest result.

Wallpaper Composition for Larger Displays

The Pro Max gives you almost 50% more display area than a standard iPhone, which changes wallpaper design considerations. Photos look more cinematic. Subtle textures show up better. Faces are larger and more present.

What to take advantage of:

- High-resolution sources matter more here than on smaller iPhones. A 2000-px-tall image upscaled to 2796 looks soft on Pro Max in a way it does not on iPhone SE. - Composition with depth works well: foreground/middle/background photos look great because the large screen renders depth cleanly. - Single dominant subjects work well: portraits, single objects, single trees, etc.

What to avoid:

- Cropped panoramas: the wider canvas exaggerates aspect ratio mismatches. - Small, repeating patterns: the high resolution makes the pattern look mechanical instead of natural. - Heavy color gradients that band visibly on AMOLED displays (yes Pro Max uses AMOLED-equivalent Super Retina XDR).
