The 6.9-inch Pro Max Display

Apple expanded the Pro Max to 6.9 inches with iPhone 16 Pro Max and kept that size for iPhone 17 Pro Max. The native resolution is 1320 x 2868 at 460 ppi, providing:

- 6% more pixels than the previous 1290 x 2796 generation (14/15 Pro Max) - Same 460 ppi pixel density - the screen is bigger, the pixels are not denser - Aspect ratio 19.5:9, the same as all current iPhones

For wallpaper design, the larger canvas amplifies design choices:

Fine details show up more (good for photographs with intricate textures). Large solid color areas feel more impactful (good for minimalist designs). Typography becomes feasible - text in wallpapers reads clearly at this size where it would be cramped on smaller iPhones. Landscape orientation usage is rare but the wider display works better for landscape photography wallpapers than smaller iPhones.

Pro Max Battery Considerations with Wallpaper Choice

OLED displays use power proportional to how many pixels are lit and how bright they are. On the Pro Max's 6.9-inch screen, wallpaper choice has measurable battery impact:

Dark wallpapers save power. Pure black areas turn off OLED pixels entirely, contributing zero power draw. A solid black wallpaper saves roughly 5-8% battery on lock screen compared to a white wallpaper at the same brightness.

Low-saturation wallpapers save power. Saturated colors (especially reds and blues) require more electrical current per pixel than muted/desaturated equivalents.

Dark mode wallpaper coordination: if you use iOS dark mode, your wallpaper should also lean dark. A bright wallpaper with dark mode UI creates a visually jarring contrast and burns extra battery on the always-on display.

For maximum battery efficiency on iPhone 17 Pro Max: choose a wallpaper that is predominantly dark with a single high-contrast accent area. Looks great, lasts longer.
